However, there are times when we feel the PC’s we have is slow, right? especially if the PC used is quite old. Not everyone can keep up with the rapid development of technology and buy the latest PC parts. So, how to make PC faster? Here are some tips that you can do.

*The tips will be categorized into 2 sections, tips for software and tips for hardware. *

Software section

1.Close many programs as possible; maybe the PC become slower because you try to open many programs at the same time.

2.Restart your PC; this is the easiest thing you can do when you feel your PC running slow. This will make your PC fresh and some problems might go away after restart.

3.Scan for viruses; viruses and malware can be the problem. Do a full scan then remove any viruses, don’t forget to update your windows security too.

4.Check your disk space; maybe the problem is because the PC’s storage almost full. Delete some unused apps, cache of programs, and some temporary data to gain more free space. To delete unused program, tap windows and search for “Add or remove programs”.

5.Update your windows and drivers; newer version of windows and drivers usually better because it’s fixing bugs from previous version. You can update your driver by go to Control Panel > Device Manager, and select what driver that you want to update. If updating your driver make more problem, you can roll back to the previous version. You can update windows by go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for Updates.

6.Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows; Lower the visual effects used, such as animations and shadow effects. This is especially true if you have a PC with a smaller amount of memory (RAM). Simply tap windows or search “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” then you can choose “Adjust for best performance” or you can custom it.

7.Check program that you used; Your PC is running slow maybe because your PC doesn’t meet the minimal requirements of the program or version of the program that you used.

8.Disable some startup programs; This will help your PC to startup faster. You can disable some startup programs by tap windows and search for “Startup”. Turn off program that have no impact as many as possible. For reminder, don’t turn off the windows apps (like windows security), and your software tools (Realtek audio, Lenovo hotkeys, Lenovo Vantage etc.).

9.Restore to Default Settings; If you are an advance and already change some setting in bios like overclock, you can try to restore your settings to default first.

10. Re-install or Restore to a restore point; Try restore to a restore point when your pc is feels good or in a prime condition. Re-install windows is the last thing you can do via software. This will make your PC so fresh and like new. Don’t forget to back-up some important files first before you do this.

Hardware section

1.Check the fans; Make sure the fans are working properly, so your PC is cool and not easy to heat up. To check this, you can see if it’s spinning or not, or you can try to hear the fan sound. If you are a laptop user, try to load something heavy first, grab some tissue and put it near the air exhaust, then see if it’s moving or not. Some vendors have software to check the fans, don’t forget to try it. Also, don’t forget to put your laptop in a hard plain area like desk, don’t put in to your bed or on your lap.

2.Clean the air circulation path; Make sure the air circulation path is clean.Obstructing dust can make air circulation less smooth and make your PC heat up quickly. Adding laptop cooler for a laptop is always good choice, especially if you use a laptop for a long time for heavy work. This will make the laptop more durable

3.Replace Thermal Paste; Maybe the thermal paste has dried, try to replace the thermal paste at least once every 2 years. Dry thermal paste will make the CPU heat up quickly, and at some points your PC will even turn itself off to prevent any damage.

4.Check the electric current; Bad electric current will affect the performance of the PC. Use good power supply and try to use stabilizer too. Do not often forcefully shut down your PC too. Because if the PC often shut down suddenly, there will be a big risk to lose data and damaged hardware.

5.Check storage; A slow PC could be because your storage is damaged or has bad sectors. On Hard Disk Drive (HDD) it’s called bad sector, and on Solid State Drive (SSD) it’s called bad block. Basically, bad sectors and bad blocks are the same. It’s a situation or condition where the computer tries to read or save the file, but it takes a very long time and is not saved, so the system finally gives up by issuing an error notification. You can check bad sector and bad block by using software like HD Tune, HDD Sentinel etc.

That’s it, you can try all those tips given above by yourself. Also, here’s some suggestion, please take a benchmark and save it whenever you upgrade your PC part or buying a new one. This will help you in the future to do a cross check whenever you feel your PC run slow. Just take a benchmark again and compare it with the prime / new condition. Good Luck 😊
