Microsoft Doesn’t Let You Buy Another Copy of Windows 10, Here’s Why

When we’re talking about OS, of course everyone knows about Windows OS. Windows OS is developed and market by Microsoft and it has been running for more than 20 years and has become one of the operating system with the largest number of users in the world. According to steam, Windows 10 is most used OS by gamer by the end of December 2022. A stable system with consistent update and lots of combability is one of the reasons behind this but did you guys now that Microsoft will stop selling Windows 10 at the end of January 2023?

Windows 10 was released back in 2015, after 7 years Microsoft finally announcing that 31 January 30, 2022 will be the last day you can buy Windows 10 on its product page. But not to worry Microsoft also announce that Windows 10 will remain supported with security updates to keep your computer safe until October 14, 2025. It basically said after 10 years Microsoft will stop the regular update for Windows 10. Microsoft also pushing us to buy or use their latest OS Windows 11 that of course still being actively receiving regular update.

I mean of course we know all Microsoft product have their own life cycle, like Windows 7 from April 11, 2009 until 10 January, 2023 or Windows 8 from January 12, 2016 until January 10 2023 and all others product as well will eventually meets their end one way or the other. Other retailer will probably still selling their physical and digital copy of Windows 10 at least for a little while and the OS will work just fine until few years and of course if you’re need Windows 10 after the sale went away, there’s always a store that still have it either digital or physical copy.

For anyone who’s still using Windows 7 and 8.1 we recommend to upgrade your OS to at least Windows 10 or Windows 11 for the better since both Windows 7 and 8.1 are already receiving their final regularly schedule update this month. Windows 10 still have 2 years left until they stop the regular update for Windows 10. The pre-installed Windows 10 on laptop and Windows most likely still be available from third parties for quite some times before Microsoft totally stop supporting the OS.

For people who still wants to use Windows 10, yes you still can use it for the next 2 years because as we said before, Windows 10 still have 2 years left until they stop the regular update for Windows 10.

For people who’s looking to upgrade from Windows 10 to windows 11 there are few things we recommend you should do before.

1.Ensure your hardware combability

Starts with checking if your PC could run Windows 11 properly. Officially, Microsoft's new OS has the following minimum system requirements:

CPU                          : 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores with 64-bit processor

RAM                           : 4 Gigabyte

Storage                     : 64 GB or larger

System Firmware     : UEFI, Secure Boot capable.

TPM                          : Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0

Graphics card            : Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.

Display                      : High definition (720p), 9” with 8 bits per color channel

You can check your specifications from Setting > System > About. However, you can also use Microsoft’s new app PC Health Checker App and it is recommended as it specify whether your pc support Windows 11 or not.

2.Enable Trusted Platform Module

TPM or Trusted Platform Module is a chip that installed in your motherboard to secure sensitive security data. First you have to check if you have the chip in your system. Open Run and type tpm.msc.

If TPM is ready to use, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. There, under Advanced Startup, you'll find the Restart Now button, then from the blue menu, click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart > Boot and change TPM 2.0 to enabled. If you’re TPM isn’t ready, you need to install it in your motherboard.

3.Enable Secure Boot

Secure boot is also a security feature similar to TPM. It ensures the system only boot from secure operating system. To enable it restart your system through Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced Startup. From there go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart > Boot and then Change Secure Boot status to Enabled.

4.Backup your data

You can’t go wrong with this, always backup your data especially your crucial data. You can backup with cloud backup or copy the data to external storage but we recommend you to do both if it’s an important data.

5.Decided whether to upgrade with or clean install

You can check the most recent cumulative Windows update in Settings > Update & security > Windows Update. From there, you can choose whether you want to download the latest version from Microsoft's website or have it updated automatically.

You are now prepared to upgrade your Windows to Windows 11 after completing these tasks. If something goes wrong, don't be afraid to ask questions in the community or forum. Remember that Windows 10 will continue to function normally even though the regular security updates have stopped; however, because there won't be any security updates, it will be more dangerous. For better security, we advise installing a third-party antivirus program like Bitdefender or Norton Antivirus.
