Everything You Should Know About Samsung Galaxy S23 series

Samsung, one of the largest electronics companies from South Korea, has always consistently presented high-end smartphones every year. One of them is the Galaxy S series lineup. Samsung released Galaxy S23 series this year. What are the improvements and new features that its offer? Let’s take a look.

When discussing technology, it feels incomplete if do not mention Samsung. Samsung is one of the largest electronics companies in the world from South Korea. They have a good reputation and are widely recognized by the public for their famously innovative and advanced products. Samsung offers a wide selection of electronic products including smartphones, televisions, home appliances, Chromebooks, and various computer components. It's a little disappointing that Samsung doesn't produce laptops (they only produce Chromebooks) to support an ecosystem like Apple and Huawei do. Ecosystem here means the interconnected system of hardware, software, and services offered by a particular brand. So that each component is complimenting and enhances the others to work together smoothly.

In an ecosystem, there is usually a smartphone at its core. Samsung is always consistent to present high-end smartphones every year, one of them is the Galaxy S series. The presence of the Galaxy S series is always one that many smartphone and technology lovers are waiting for. The camera, performance, and new technology offered are some of the reasons why. This year, or more precisely on February 1, 2023, Samsung released their new flagship called the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, including at the Samsung Unpacked Singapore event. At the event with the tagline #ShareTheEpic introduced 3 variants of Samsung Galaxy 23 series, Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 ultra just like the previous year.

There are some upgrades and changes that you should know before you buy this smartphone, such as:

Design

In term of design, the appearance of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is not so different compared to its predecessor which is the Galaxy S22 series. The layout of the rear camera is exactly the same, although there is a significant upgrade here (we'll talk about it later). There are also some components that have shifted slightly such as the microphone hole for example. For the Galaxy S23 Ultra, there are still S-pen like the S22 ultra which was originally a feature of the Note series. There will be updates to this S-pen feature so that it will be more convenient and can be used in various scenarios. Besides the top and bottom, now the sides and front are also made more boxy-shape, but still with a slight curve. So, it feels more rigid when held.

Color Variants

There are 4 color options for Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which is Phantom Black, Green, Cream, and Lavender. Please note that the green color in S23 series is different from what we got in S22 series. There are other additional colors that are only available exclusively during Pre-Order time through the official Samsung website, such as Lime, Graphite, Sky Blue, and Red for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but for the Galaxy S23+ is Lime and Graphite only.

Build Quality

Samsung Galaxy S23 series is more environmentally friendly, because for some construction materials such as glass, plastic and aluminum are made from recycled materials. Also, the box is made of 100% recycled paper. However, the body of this smartphone is still sturdy with corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 both on the front and back, as well as the aluminum frame.

Camera

This sector has the most significant improvement, especially for the S23 Ultra variant. Recently, the official Samsung account posted a lot of teaser videos that show the camera features of this smartphone with a layout that resembles the layout of the rear camera of this cellphone. One of them is the following video (https://fb.watch/ir9Gw0Vdtn/), which illustrates the super ability to perform zooming. The Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with 200MP (Mega Pixels) main camera with upgraded OIS which will make more stable video and better night shots, 12MP Ultrawide camera, 10MP Telescope Camera (3x zoom), 10MP Periscope telescope camera (10x zoom), and a laser auto-focus. The maximum video resolution of the main camera is 8K 24/30 fps. On the rear camera, 2 new features were added, namely Hyper lapse and Astro-photo, which can be used to take pictures of stars without additional equipment. Selfie camera is 12MP, a downgrade compared to its predecessor (S22 Ultra) which is 40MP. However, the selfie camera now supports recording video up to 4K 60fps and HDR10+.

Chipset or System on a Chips (SoC)

Samsung Galaxy S23 series still maintains their tradition by using the best chipset on the market, which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. However, it is different from the default one, because the one used here is Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. The difference is, "for galaxy" version has a faster prime core CPU (from 3.2GHz to 3.36GHz) and a faster GPU clock (from 680 MHz to 719 MHz). The ray tracing feature, which is a built-in feature of the Snapdragon Gen 2 chipset feature also runs well. One of the games that can utilize this ray tracing feature is Asphalt 9. with the help of this feature, the graphics displayed will be more stunning, especially the light effects from cars and roads.

Battery

Both Galaxy S23 and S23+ got an upgrade, which is a 200 mAh bigger battery, while the battery capacity of the S23 ultra is still the same (5000 mAh). Unfortunately, the wireless charge feature drops from 15 watts to 10 watts.

Software

Samsung Galaxy 23 series comes with the latest OneUI 5.1 and Android 13. Samsung promises up to 4 years of software updates, which means this Galaxy S23 series will at least get android 17. This software update will provide a better user experience and after-sales price.
